Gretchen's Scribbles: Developing A Thick Skin

It is said - by whom? you might ask - by, well most everyone, that you have to develop a thick skin as a writer. I'm definitely not known as someone who has a thick skin - I've been labeled things such as "sensitive" and "tender." However, those literary "criticisms" that I've received, I find exhilirating! I think, "I knew that! I knew there was a problem there...and now I need to fix it".

I think that an excellent way to work at this - and to discover your temperament - is to be part of a writer's critique. The group that I'm going to in Lititz, PA does this. Your 2-5 pages of manuscript is read aloud and the individuals in the group critique it. You are not allowed to defend it, only to answer direct questions. I enjoy it. I do realize that it may be an entirely different experience to receive rejection e-mails/letters and to discover that there may not be anyone interested in publishing the novel that I've written.

I also know that this isn't easy for everyone. I saw a woman (who was an excellent writer, by the way) who looked very upset as she sat in her car as I drove away the other day. I felt bad...she had been in the group I had critiqued. Hopefully...and most importantly, I guess...neither her nor I will quit...but we'll hang onto the fact that God has given us a gift...a weapon...that can continually be sharpened and improved.

I didn't make it far with this book. I just couldn't get into it as much as I tried. I love the title and the concept though. For the wide audience that loves Amish romances (and there have been a few that I've liked), hopefully you'll enjoy it alot more!

Worse, as they arrive home from the gravesite, the family receives news of Mike's death in battle. Embittered, Frank stops attending church and cuts off family and friends.

By the time a very pregnant Thi Nhuong arrives on his doorstep on a stormy Christmas Eve, Frank is so filled with hate that he slams the door in her face, shutting her out in the bitter cold. Finally, overcome by guilt, he tries to go after her, but driving wind and snow force him back inside. Gretchen's Scribbles: Editing, Take 2

Well, I'm a third of the way through my second edit...working on dialogue and writing new pages. I've actually come up with 3 new story points to work in!

It feels like forever :) and I'm tempted to get discouraged, but I keep reminding myself that I need to enjoy the journey.

I've decided to pass it on to the people who've said they'd be willing to read it over the past several years as soon as I'm done with this edit. I'll have more to do while they're taking a pass at it.

Alice sold her first story to David C. Cook for a take-home Sunday School paper called Sprint. The year was 1988, this was her first submission to a paying market, and the check sent to her was for $125.00.

She was on her way!

Since then, Alice has sold articles and devotions to the Upper Room, Alive Now, Standard Publishing, ByLine magazine and others.

In 2006 she sent her novel Rain Song to Bethany House...and the rest is history! She signed a two -book deal and the second, How Sweet It Is will be out in 2009.
